Calling All Hellfish Here in the United States, today is Veteran’s Day. We would like to take a moment to thank all the men and women who give their time, energy, and lives serving in the armed forces. Although today is Veteran’s Day in the US, we are an international community and would like to extend our thanks and thoughts to those who also observe Remembrance Day, Armistice Day, or any other national holiday organized around honoring those in uniform. We will be happy to add any other holidays to the OP if your country of origin uses another name. If you have served in a branch of the armed services somewhere in the world, we would like to present you with this Flying Hellfish badge to thank you for all that you do and have done. Feel free to share your stories with us if you would like. Feel free to revive this thread, our appreciation and respect extend far beyond one day of the year. Please do not ask for this badge if you have not served in the armed forces. We are working on the honor system here and simply want to thank those among us who put themselves in harm’s way. It would be disrespectful to claim service for the sake of collecting badges. A special thanks to LSLeong for planting the seed and starting the ball rolling on this one over the summer.

Fraggle Great idea and great thread. We never do enough for our veterans. I just wanted to acknowledge my dad and maternal grandfather who were in the army. Here is their story. My dad was drafted during Vietnam (thankfully did not serve overseas) and served in Lawton, Oklahoma for two years. My grandfather (decreased) served during World War II and received received a Purple Heart with cluster for 2 wounds received (including a metal plate in his arm for the rest of his life). I am proud to be their descendant and wish to thank them for their service. Thank you to all veterans!

I know of a couple more. Hopefully we will have some folks share their stories. I'm going to leave this one stickied for the next week, but it will not go away. As members sign up, please encourage them to come here in the future if they served.

On a serious note though, I would like to thank the armed forces worldwide, for putting their lives on the line daily, for little pay, and often little recognition, all so we back home can sleep safely at night. And I would like to share the Remembrance Day poppy to show my support.

Despite my post above* I don't mean to make light of this and obviously have all the respect in the world for all of the armed forces out there. I don't know how they find the courage to do what they do. *removed my first post, I felt it was out of place.

On the 11th of November at 11am the UK has a two minute silence in show of remembering. I love the idea of a badge for all those who have served across the globe. Respect to you all and my thoughts are with those who have lost love ones.

I've never served, but I won't forget, and have the utmost respect for the men who died for my and everyone else's freedom. So thank you to all who do get this badge and everyone else who has served.
And God damn it, it's Veterans Day, listen to some Lee Greenwood

Hell yes another badge for doing nothing. Err, nothing that isn't already my job. And I didn't even have to change my Facebook picture today because there are no photos of me out of uniform.
Appreciate the thoughts.

Appreciate the thoughts. See, based on your avatar I always imagine you kind of look like a stern Homer. I have to admit that would kind of scare the crap out of me in a nervous laughter kind of way if I ever walked into a classroom and saw you standing at the head of the class. joelmoly I know you have mentioned being in the military before and I know you teach now. Are you still active or were you doing GI Bill or something? Both my parents were in the military and it's how they were able to earn their advanced degrees.

Stern Homer...slimmer and I have all my hair. I'm pretty sure we drink about the same amount, though. I am told I look perpetually pissed off, which served me well as a Drill Sergeant. I've been active 21 years. My teaching (Army stuff) gig ended and I'm still pending reassignment. I'm probably retiring next year and now I have to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. I'm still doubting my ability to function outside the system.

Does riding Transformers The Ride count? Kidding, I doubt it does. My grandpa did serve years ago, salutes to him.

I have never served in the military, and want to offer my deepest gratitude for those that have sacrificed in order to uphold human rights around the world. The occasion of Remembrance Day causes me to not only pause and remember those sacrifices, but also reminds me of the cost of war and conflict. When political decisions are made that place our sons and daughters into harm's way, these sacrfices are not merely counted in a ledger or in a news report. They are counted in shattered and lost lives. Let us not forget that everytime a politician beats the drum for military intervention, it is not about puffing our chest and flexing our might, it is about asking our citizens to risk life and limb. While there are times when such risks are warranted and even needed, it should be a somber decision indeed and never one that is cheered by pundits on cable news.
