With the success of the last contest, the Springfield Palace of Fine Arts (SPOFA) is happy to announce the start of a monthly art contest! Each month, we'll present you with a new artist or theme for you to create an inspired art piece in your town using the decor items. This month's artist is Piet Mondrian who was known for his abstract paintings. You are free to use buildings as well for this challenge. Please post your finished art piece in this thread along with a picture of the Mondrian painting which inspired it. All entries are due by 11:59pm Tuesday, July 9. The Pics & Rec judges will pick the top three and bring them to the forum members for the final vote. All worthy entries (ones that show some effort) will receive a David award if the artist does not already have one. Winners of the challenges will receive a beautiful new Gummi Venus de Milo badge. The rarest gummi of them all, this award was carved by gummi artisans who work exclusively in the medium of gummi. We hope you will treasure it rather than eat it

I'm so in for this. Mine is the Mondrian Composition II, in Red, Blue and Yellow. My sister has this in her living room. I gave up trying to get it to match perfectly. Photoshop's automated function kept making it really weird so I did it manually to the best I could get it to line up.

So would you like us to recreate a specific Mondrian piece? Or would something that is inspired by his style, like this, work as well? (Not entirely sure, but I believe) The work that served as inspiration is called Composition A (1923).

I only have 1 limo, so the black lines will be hard to do. Need to find another piece of his. This is a cool challenge, hope to have some time to work on it next week. (though it'll be hard to beat Linz already)

(though it'll be hard to beat Linz already) I find that snapdragons are nice for dark lines... and only take up 1 square. You might give them a try! Of course, they are a bit "fuzzy" on the edges so maybe not the best if you are a stickler about straight lines. But really, how much of a stickler can you be when designing with decorations?

So this is perfect!

This artwork is a little bit easier now that all the fences rotate like the squid port ones.
Could have used that when I was making my flag.

Oh my goodness, I love this contest more than I thought I would. (No offense to Mondrian.) Linz, that is great (and possibly my favorite, though I don't play favorites). I love the simplicity. duelcitizen, L-O-V-E the use of bridges and water in the corner! petergeenen, that is a really clever use of roadblocks. It took me a second to recognize what was there. Very nice! Weighty, I really love all the colors you have made. I can only imagine that it leaves a pretty big footprint in your town. Your inspiration piece looks like it might be a quilt... that would go nicely in my guest room.

One reason I participate in the contests (besides the fun of it) is so I get constantly updated on the new posts! Hahaha SO MUCH CREATIVITY!! Some people on this forum are geniuses.

It takes up a huge chunk in my town but i'm currently in a redesign (which has been going on for months) so it's not a problem! This is the first contest i have got involved in and i'm looking forward to taking part in more. I have no idea how you guys come up with so many contest ideas. They're all so awesome

Ok so, I really need to do this. My grandfather was an art lecturer and he had a Mondrian on the wall of his lounge I think it was the one that Linz has referred to. Anyway mine is inspired by that, not an exact replica and is called Piet a Terre, due to the fact that it's made of natural materials and because July is the month in which Wilfred Owen published the poem A Terre. (There's no link between the two facts). All entries so far are excellent by the way.

KJ I really like how you chose to work against the perspective in the landscape. It creates a really cool illusion - as if the painting is hanging like an actual canvas would.
