The transporter by the workers' houses is crucial because that is how they gain entry to the base in spite of the moat that harbors unseen creatures with ominous tentacles.
Behind the Spooky House, deep in the Spooky Forest, on the edge of town where even Nelson won't go Trick or Treating, is Area 51.
The Headquarters & Research Labs are hidden in an underground bunker accessed via the Spooky House cellar, but the storage facility is in the field out back. Of course, being Springfield, things are done a bit half-assed, so the gates are always open & guarded by only a couple of teenage trainee mages instead of qualified, heavily armed troops.....aaaand rather than storing all the weird, & potentially lethal extraterrestrial items safely, in separate blast proof rooms underground, they've all been dumped in the field together....& the Ark of the Stone Covenant doesn't even have a lid on it!
Poor Kodos is well aware of this & is trying to look harmless in case something really nasty arrives through the portals or teleporters, or maybe he's just worried the scientists might hook him up to that weird donut making probe device. Either way he'll be in trouble, so he's just hoping he doesn't end up like one of those guys in the pink tubes!
