Just spit-balling an idea...
On October 30th/31st, a little over a week before the Simpsonarama episode premiers, a mysterious orb appears in Springfield with an accompanying storyline of the Springfielders trying break open the orb. This includes numerous visible jobs for Homer, Flanders, Moe, Wiggum and some optional premium characters like Frink.
On November 6th/7th, the orb finally reveals itself as a time portal, dumping Bender and Fry into Springfield. The Springfielders are disturbed by the sight of a robot and a pale-skinned human -- likewise, Bender is disturbed by the sight of the yellow-skinned meatbags. Before the Springfielders can mob them though, Comic Book Guy intercedes because he recognizes them.
CBG: Wait! I know these two! They're from that great show that Fox cancelled in its prime!
Homer: The Tick?
CBG: No.
Bart: Family Guy?
CBG: We just had a crossover with them last month!
Milhouse: Oooo! I know! Firefly!
Martin: Hah! Clearly, these gentlemen are from The Lone Gunmen!
CBG: *sighs*
Sideshow Mel: Is it Arrested Development?
Homer: It's the Tick, right?
CBG: Futurama, you ignoramuses! They're from Futurama! It was Matt Groening's masterpiece!
At the same time, Bender and Fry recognize the Springfielders.
Fry: Hey wait, I know these guys! They're the beloved characters from the Simpsons!
Bender: Ughh. That show? It's been going down hill since Season 500. I wish we were sent to the world from Bob's Burgers or something.
From there, Lisa and Prof. Frink learn from Bender and Fry that they were sent from the future to prevent an event from destroying their universe. Frink informs Bender and Fry that during their time travels, they must have crossed over into their universe and they're possibly trapped here now. This branches off into three separate short quest lines, leading up to Sunday's episode.
Quest Lines:
* Lisa and Homer (with Prof. Frink as an optional member for those that own him) try to find a way to send these wayward time travelers back home.
* Bender realizes that Springfield is ripe for the looting with its plethora of unused museums and other businesses. "Free wax statues? Alright, baby!"
* Fry enjoys being back in his own time -- albeit one of a yellower shade -- and decides to make the best of it by spending his time at the arcade and crashing in the brown house. By the end of the storyline, he becomes the delivery boy for Zesty's Pizza.
At the end of the quests, it turns out that Lisa and Homer's plans to send Bender and Fry back don't work and they're officially stuck in Springfield.
Bender: So what happens to us now?
Lisa: You two can become productive members of our society...
Homer: Most likely, you'll just fade into the background like every other event character that shows up here.
Lisa: Dad...
Homer: You remember how many eggs people had to spend to get Shary Bobbins? When's the last time we've even seen her?
Lisa: That doesn't mean they aren't useful characters though. They all provide the town with money and valuable experience.
Homer: Unlike that useless Mayan god. *shakes fist* Stupid useless Mayan god.
Fry: If we're staying, can I keep my arcade task? I'm this close to getting the high score on Space Invaders!
Lisa: Sure. And maybe a year down the road, EA will wheel you guys out as a premium purchase.
Bender: Screw this! Bender B. Rodriguez is not going to be a boring background character!
Homer: Sure, whatever. Say hi to the Yes Guy for me.
And from there, it would lead into the next event where time portals begin open across Springfield as the denizens of Futurama arrive in Springfield and Bender leads a revolution of his fellow Earthicans against the citizens of Springfield. Haven't thought it fully through, but it would end with Mayor Quimby and Krusty negotiating with Bender to hand over half of Krustyland as the new home of New New New York.
Jumping into another big event between Halloween and Christmas probably wouldn't work... But it'd be a nice idea. And would give us some use for Krustyland. Either that or another map to start building a Futurama land on. Who knows... I tried.
EDIT:
Alright, I came up with the start for the event. The next through the time portal is Leela and Prof. Farnsworth who crash the Planet Express ship into the mountain region north of Springfield, where it'll remain in its wrecked state till the end of the month. They were making a large delivery for Slurm when their ship was sucked through the time portal, causing the Slurm to run into the radioactive waters of Springfield (because we all wanted the return of green rivers!), creating an army of Blinkies from the Black Lagoon that terrorize Springfield. Squashing them result in you gaining cans of Slurm, the event's currency.
From there, the event splits off into three stories --
* Lisa teams up with Prof. Frink to find Prof. Farnsworth (who's been shipped off to the Retirement Castle) in order to fix the mutant Blinkies. This story results in Amy Wong, Prof. Wernstrom and Ethan "Bubblegum" Tate joining.
* Homer rallies the citizens of Springfield to fight back against Bender, who's growing his own army from those he drags through the time portals. This story results in Hermes Conrad, Richard Nixon's Head & Headless Spiros Agnew, Zapp Brannigan and Kif Kroker joining.
* Finally, Fry and Leela spend their story trying to escape from Mr. Burns, who wishes to capture the "one-eyed freak" to revitalize that freak show tent that's been collection dust. Along the way, Fry and Leela discover other 'freaks' that Mr. Burns has captured, leading to Nibbler, Dr. Zoidberg and Scruffy joining.
It's probably long and very confusing... I know.
