Here you will find information about how you can earn donuts, and some facts about the Premium Items and Donuts. Save the drama fo' yo momma; this is an informational post; not a place for you to complain. Well-adjusted people don't care how others spend their entertainment money.
Notes:
1. Thanks to j_3xx9 for initially posting the Mystery Box/Buddha/GSO odds from the Raw Files.
2. Some "Limited Time/No Longer Available" items may still be available. I may have added these items to the appropriate sections early to save time.)
How do I get Free Donuts?
#1: Donuts can be earned through in-game challenges.
Here is a summary of how many donuts can be earned, with a chronological list at the bottom of this post:
A total of 64 Donuts can be earned from in-game challenges by the time you reach level 28 (not including donuts from Bonus Levels)
1. Leveling up: 34 Donuts can be earned for reaching level 28.
2. Jebediah Springfield Statue: 10 Donuts
3. Adding Friends/Origin: 7 Donuts can be earned from the "I Choo Choo Choose You" adding friends challenges and the "using Origin" challenge(through level 27).
4. MISC Challenges: Mystery Box Challenge gives 10 Donuts, Lisa completing the first trash clean up earns 1 donut ("Springfield Cleaners Pt. 2").
5. Bonus Levels: After reaching the current max level of 26, you can now earn Donuts from Bonus Levels. You can get 3 donuts every time from the Bonus Level Game, as you can keep paying $50,000 until you get 3 Donuts. Level 25's first Bonus Level started at 120,000 XP, and raised 20% with each successive level. All of Level 26 & Level 27's bonus levels are 120,000 XP. Level 28 saw the return of the incremental increase in Bonus Levels, capping at 10,000,000 XP.
#2: Donuts from Cleaning Trash:
Other than the initial donut received when Lisa cleans trash for the 1st time, the odds of receiving a Donut from trash cleanup is 2%.
#3: Donuts from "Special Promotions"
1. 5 Donuts were awarded on SAlNT Patrick's Day
2. 5 Donuts were awarded on Valentine's Day
3. During the XMAS event, Coins could be used to purchase Santa Stockings. These stockings contained either Donuts or Reindeer. This is the only recent event that has allowed users to earn extra donuts, and there are no guarantees that future events will reward donuts.
4. 10 Donuts were awarded for correctly answering a trivia question during the first Halloween Update.
5. 12 Donuts were given on Whacking Day
**There may have been other "Promotional" donut giveaways that I can not remember. The "Game Almost Fixed - free 60 donuts" thread does not apply to new users. It is an outdated and misleading thread. Flag it.
#4: Daily Bonus Mystery Box
Donuts/Premium Items can be obtained from the Mystery Box you get on the 5th day of the daily bonus. You have ~13% chance of getting a premium item or Donuts from a Mystery Box, and the Lemon Tree has a 10% chance of being pulled from the Mystery Box. The Donuts listed in (parentheses) is what you'll receive IF you already have the initial prize. So, if you already have Squeaky Voice Teen, you can't get him again. Instead, the reward is substituted with (Donuts).
#5: Using other Apps to earn iTunes Gift Cards (may not be available in all countries)
There are apps that offer "rewards" for using them. Some apps give you points to watch trailers for other apps, and/or to download and play other apps. These rewards can be turned into iTunes cards, and then used to buy donuts. It is up to you to determine if the time invested in these apps is worth the potential donuts. They have been used successfully by other users.
AppTrailers is an app that gives you points for watching App Trailers and trying out apps. These points can be used for iTunes cards.
Tapjoy is a service that rewards premium currency for trying new games. TSTO advertised their game in Tapjoy (to gain users), but does not currently participate by offering donuts for trying other apps.
Here is a chronological breakdown of how and when you earn donuts.

***If you don't use these speedups, there are 4 more potential donuts that can be added to the totals listed.
****5 donuts are added to your account to purchase Homer's Hammock - I have NOT bypassed this purchase.
Golden Scratch Off (GSO)
Based on the odds, the GSO is a good value if only plan to spend $10-$20 at most. If you plan on purchasing a larger amount of donuts anyways, the odds favor you just buying a Boatload or a Store. However, if you buy 2 scratch offs (the cost of 12 donuts) you will at least get 12 donuts, so you can only win if you're only going to spend a small amount of total $$ on the game. Of course, the odds don't guarantee results, so anything can happen, just trying to look at it from "the casino's" perspective:
Here are the payout odds (from the Raw Files, thanks J_3xx9 for posting the odds):
100 Donuts: 2%
50 Donuts: 4%
20 Donuts: 10%
12 Donuts: 20%
9 Donuts: 33.33%
6 Donuts: 30.67%
Based on the odds, if you bought 100 Golden Scratch Offs, you'd receive 1326 Donuts (100*2 + 50*4 + 20*10 + 12*20 + 9*34 + 6*30). If you used the same $100 on a Boatload of Donuts, you'd get 2400 Donuts (versus ~1326).
If you bought 50 Golden Scratch Offs, you'd receive 663 Donuts (100*1 + 50*2 + 20*5 + 12*10 + 9*17 + 6*15). If you used the same $50 on a Store Full of Donuts, you'd have gotten 900 (versus ~663).
As you can see, It's not until you start spending less $$ that you start to see the odds turn in your favor. (This is based mainly on the fact that you may be spending less on the total donut package, but your cost per donut INCREASES. Boatloads will still give you the best predictable value if you're going to spend the $$ on donuts.)
20 GSO = ~265 Donuts vs 300 Donuts from Truckload
10 GSO = ~133 Donuts vs 132 Donuts from Tray
5 GSO = ~66 Donuts vs 60 Donuts from Stack
2 GSO = ~27 Donuts vs 12 Donuts from Dozen

FAQ:
Do the Premium Items/Donuts ever go on sale?
Yes, starting around XMAS 2012, there has been around 1 sale a month. These sales are usually found in the Raw Files before they happen. Most of the sales have saved Donuts on the premium items (Professor Frink's Lab sale didn't actually save donuts as it bundled a Homer's Buddha and Simpson's in-game $$ for 250 Donuts, more than the 150 Donut regular cost of the Lab.) During XMAS, the donuts were on "sale"; 25% more donuts were added to each package for the regular price.
Are there any extra benefits of Premium Characters and Skins/Outfits?
Premium Characters & Premium Skins/Outfits pay 50% more $$/XP than regular characters & skins. Example: a 1 hour task for a regular character pays $70, you get $105 for a premium character.
I just started playing, and I want all the characters! HOW MUCH WILL THEY COST? (no longer updating this part)
All the currently available premium characters cost 1200 Donuts (top image). This doesn't include the task-less characters: Santa's Little Helper (150 donuts) and the Funzo's (180 donuts for all 3). The Springfield Sign & Tire Fire (210 Donuts), the premium buildings that don't come with characters (335 Donuts, bottom image), and decorations ARE NOT INCLUDED in the 1200 Donut Cost (only the TOP image below = 1200 Donuts).
Are there any Premium Items that I can't buy at the current time?
Yes, the following items were only available for a Limited Time period.
Kang w/ Raygun (Kang's price varied between 100-200 donuts, and Simpson's $$.)
Witch Marge Skin w/ Cauldron (90 donuts)
Mausoleum (60 donuts)
Bart Raven (30 donuts)
Itchy Balloon (40 donuts)
Snowball 2 Balloon (20 donuts)

Why do I get different payouts when I tap my Leprechaun?
The base payout odds for the Leprechaun are:
$5: 75%
1 XP: 23%
$20: 1%
20 XP: 1%
What's the difference between Premium Buildings & Decorations?
For the purposes of this guide, we'll refer to buildings and decorations as follows. Premium Buildings have a payout schedule, just like the free buildings in the game. Premium Decorations don't have a payout schedule. Instead, they provide a % increase to your character tasks and other building payouts. Some "decorations" may be listed with buildings as you can only purchase ONE of them (Springfield Sign, Tire Fire). In contrast, the XMAS tree had a payout like a building, as do the Whacking Day items that produced Snakes.
Have there been any FREE GIVEAWAYS?
Yes. There have been a few special giveaways that tie in with new Simpson's episodes. These include Fat Tony, Duff Racer, Cool Brown House, Gorgeous Grampa character skin, Fruit Bat Signal, Springfield Falls.
What are the non-premium "Limited Time" buildings?
During Halloween 2012, the Cemetery, Pet Cemetery, House of Evil, and "Heck House" Church building skin were available for non-Donut currency. During XMAS 2012, the Mapple store was available (no longer available for donuts). During Valentine's Day 2013, Phineas Q. Butterfat's, Howard's Flowers, and Sir Merriweather's Putt-A Lot were available. The Cool Brown House was also given away as an episodic tie in. O'Flanagan's Pub was given away around SAlNT Patrick's Day 2013. Springfield Coliseum, Duff Stadium, Sleep Eazy Motel, were all part of the Whacking Day 2013 update.
What are the non-premium "Limited Time" decorations?
There have been many seasonal decorations and that were available for non-Donut currency. For Halloween 2012, Mayan Calendar, trees w/ no leaves, "spooky" trees, and jack-o-lanterns were available. During the January update, Marge/Lisa/Maggie snowmen were also available. During the Valentine's update these items were available: rose bush, rose tree, V-Day Pond, rose arches, heart planter, cherub topiary, 'I Choo-Choo-Choose You' train, Fruit-Bat Signal. Whacking Day has the Whacking Day Banner, T-Shirt Stall, Mug Stall, Whacking Stick Stall, and Wind Sock.
What are the non-premium "Limited Time" characters?
The Mayan God and the Burns Monster are both characters with no tasks that were available during Halloween 2012 for non-Donut currency. Barney, Santa's Little Helper, Pink Funzo, and the Purple Funzo were available for non-donut currency during the XMAS 2012 update. The XMAS 2012 characters are currently available for Donuts. Tom O'Flanagan was given away with the pub for SAlNT Patrick's Day 2013.
Where do I buy the Jebediah Springfield Statue?
The only way to get him is to tap on Homer 10 times (usually done during his initial MyPad task, but can be done later).
Where do I buy the Lemon Tree?
The Lemon Tree is only available through the Mystery Box. You have a 10% chance of getting the Lemon Tree from the Mystery Box. Be patient, and you'll probably get one from your Daily Bonus. You could also buy Mystery Boxes with Donuts if you are less patient and are not on a Donut Budget.
How do I earn free Premium Items?
You can earn earn 3 Burning Bushes through land purchases. They can be found in: D1 ($610), A7 ($35,000), and L10 ($95,000). The letter/numbers are based on these grid labels.
A B C D E F G H I J K L M
1
2
3

5....
You can also earn them from the Mystery Box obtained through the Daily Bonus.
How do I calculate my % increase from premium items and my star rating?
Besides calculating this manually by adding the boost % for all your items, you can also do a little math when you collect from a character or building. Count the $$ you collected, then divide that by the base $$ payout. Subtract 1 from that #, then multiply by 100, and you a good idea what your % increase is. (Example, the Gulp'n'Blow has a base payout of $100, but you collect $112 from it. $112/$100=1.12; 1.12-1 = .12; .12 x 100 = 12% boost.) (For the Gulp-n-Blow, you don't really need to do that calculation; just subtract $100 from the payout you collect, and that's your % increase. The forumla/calculation is useful for other buildings and tasks.)
[b[Bonus % = ((Payout/Base Payout)-1)*100[/b]

The Springfield Sign & Tire Fire (210 Donuts), the premium buildings that don't come with characters (335 Donuts, bottom image), and decorations ARE NOT INCLUDED in the 1200 Donut Cost (only the TOP image below = 1200 Donuts).
