You can re-add at any time with a simple removal. They can also instantly invite you one removed. So that's a safe testing option. As to why this would happen... not sure. Haven't read about it. Usually entering another town and returning fixes any missing town due to recent add problems for me.

Try logging out of the game and back in again. That can work too, sometimes.
