And you can move / store them whenever you unlock the land they are on. (You can sell them too, but who would want to do that?)

When is the land unlocked? It takes quite a while as you need to complete the entire Northward Bound event first. And after you finish the event, you then need to complete a Connie Appleseed questline (getting supplies for the bridge, then building it). Unlocking each new land square requires at least one land deed. (They cost one deed at first, but start getting more expensive as you move on. I see a “two deed” square up next, but I have no idea what the most-expensive ones will cost.) The land deeds are acquired by sending a character (Connie Appleseed, Cookie, Homer, Moe, or Chief Wiggum) prospecting (an 8-hour task). You also need three prospecting maps to start the task. The prospecting maps are generated by the Prospector’s Shack (one map every 8 hours) and by Jackpot Realty (5 maps every 24 hours). (It costs 6 donuts to hurry up the shack, or 12 donuts for Jackpot Realty.) If you want to use donuts for the land, it costs 15 for a 1-deed square, or 30 for a 2-deed square. (I’d imagine the the deeds will continue going up in price by a factor of 15…) The nice thing about the new land is you can keep/store all of the tree clusters, buffalo, and donut veins. (The game allows you to sell the stuff too, but I think it’s better to just store it for later.)
