Although I'm not going to go through the game files and figure things out (someone will do that eventually), the social aspect of the event is the one thing that could use some explaining.
As for as I can tell, you can send nerds to raid buildings from your actual friends list, as well as some random towns (no clue if they are real people's towns or not, but these are from the icon in the upper right corner of your screen). You must have a nerd to attack a building, and the # of nerds sent determines how long you have to wait to reap the full "Potential reward". This is just a guess, but when a neighbor taps on a building you've attacked, your neighbor collects gold & syrum, and you also get a part of your total potential reward, though not the full amount. So, you can send many nerds to try to quickly get the rewards from a building or two, or spread out the attacks by sending one nerd to many buildings, and then waiting and hoping that the neighbor doesn't tap. Again, none of this is confirmed, just some quick guesses based on my limited experiences in the event.

I just started playing - I even did the no-no to speed up building the castle (8 donuts). Yeah, you can send nerds to other Springfields. The prizes look cool. Link: Clash of Clans - Simpsons Tapped Out

It looks like you get 20/10 elixir/gold if you "defend" your building, and only 10/5 elixir/gold if your building is destroyed. I still don't know about how much elixir/gold you collect from other towns, but I'm guessing that every hour your attacked building is not defended, you gain more elixir gold and eventually gain the maximum reward when/if the time elapses.

Now friends in different time zones come in handy
